Finding a Forever Home

Adoption can be a wonderful gift to all those involved. However, creating a new forever home for a child, may also come with some unexpected stressors. Many people do not consider the negative aspects of adoptions when they are hoping to grow their family. There are 7 core issues of adoptions that all families should be aware of before making the decision about whether or not adoption is the right choice for them. Being prepared to help the child address these issues will be a necessary part of the connection process when brining an adopted child into your home permanently.

7 core issues of Adoption

  • Loss
  • Rejection
  • Guilt/Shame
  • Grief
  • Identity
  • Intimacy & Relationships
  • Control/Gains

Adoption can be a wonderful experience. Families may be able to give a child who has become separated from their biological family a new forever home, and families that might not otherwise be able to conceive are able to grow their family. What most people might not consider during the adoption process is how much grief and loss the child may experience even if the child is adopted from a very young age. Sometimes children may not even understand what they are feeling.  Instead they act out in ways that may seem odd to those around them.

Families that are blended by adoptions may not understand the internal struggle of the child. Allowing that child to release some of the energy associated with the grief and loss during counseling may help the entire family to become more connected.
