Alternative Relationships
Many people form romantic relationships that stray from the societal norm. Polyamory, open relationships, kink-friendly, BDSM, asexual and aromantic relationships as well as many more fall under this umbrella of alternative relationship styles.
Individuals in such relationships may be hesitant to seek couples counseling due to fear that their counselor may not be knowledgeable or experienced with their specific problem. It is important for a therapist to understand that none of these relationship styles are pathological, but are merely a special way of seeking human connection.
During therapy, the therapist seeks to understand the couple with an open mind. The therapist’s goal is to assist the couple with communicating their needs. Therapy is a safe atmosphere in which the couple can address underlying issues without fear of judgment or rejection.
