The word “pivot” has become trendy over the past couple of years. One definition of Pivot can mean a purposeful, strategic shift in direction or to improve, not just survive. Pivoting means not just letting life push you around, but thoughtfully choosing to shift or change so that things can continue in a positive direction. Pivoting is active and not passive. To pivot means to set your course in a way that you will hopefully arrive at a desired outcome even if maybe you never wanted or planned to have to pivot.
Pivoting means change—even micro-changes—and we do not always like change. Two common topics that often arise in therapy sessions are change and the unknown. Generally, we do not like dealing with either of these. We are afraid of change because with it comes uncertainty. We like certainty because we want to be sure that things like jobs, relationships and investments will turn out the way we want.
We often shy away from change because it involves an element of the unknown. When things change there is the potential for positive, negative and even neutral outcomes. I have found that oftentimes clients tend to fixate on what could not go well versus entertaining the thought that change also holds the potential for things to go well.
The cliché saying is that “the only constant is change.” And like so many cliches, it exists because it is true. We are about halfway through the year and I am sure you have already faced some changes since January. What is going well for you? What holds the possibility for improvement? What is going differently than you planned and how can you pivot to accommodate this change or uncertainty?
