Strength in Change—The Personal Side

Many year ago now, I had a job as a young person that was, to say the least, chaotic. I liked the person who was my direct boss. However, the two main bosses and the business overall were very poorly organized. I worked there for 2 years and some weeks if felt like every day was different. Each morning, I would arrive and not know what kind of problem I would have to solve. Our two main bosses often played hooky from work so this left me and my boss to figure things out that were often above our pay grade.

I am thankful for many things about that challenging season. I am thankful that the person I answered to was kind, funny, resourceful and showed up every day. I am also thankful that I learned during that season how to be flexible, have a sense of humor and roll with the punches.  Flexibility engenders strength and ability to pivot and I am thankful that I learned some of that in my 20s.

Learning to adapt and be flexible is not always fun. However, the ability to pivot is something we will all need at one time in life or another. We are not always going to like or know how our life is going to go. And though we don’t like to admit it, we have much less control over our lives than we believe. What we always have control over though is our response. We control how we respond to whatever life brings. Notice I said respond and not react. Respond means we slow down and consider who we want to be in this chapter of our life story when we look back.  Responding to change involves consideration and the willingness to adapt.

Sometimes things do not change for many years. This has been the case for this blog. I have been blogging for about 15 years now and have loved being able to share with you all from a clinical and a personal perspective. But, just like this blog talks about, change is often inevitable.  After much thought, I have decided that this will be my last blog on the site for a while. Instead, I am going to post podcasts that I think are helpful under the “resources” portion of our web page. I hope you will check them out and enjoy listening to some of the podcasts I find encouraging.  For now, if you are struggling with change or have any other mental health need, we are here to help. We would love to support you as you learn the skills to pivot well in life and look forward to the future with hope.
