Relationship Issues

Good communication is essential to the health and longevity of any relationship. Marriage and couples counseling (including premarital counseling) teaches couples communication skills that enable them to appropriately discuss emotionally charged topics like finances, religion, politics, sexual issues, parenting styles, family of origin issues, etc.

During therapy, the therapist models positive communication skills and then coaches couples to use these skills in the sessions. Assignments are also given so that couples can practice their new skill sets in their own home environments.

The goal of marriage or couples’ counseling is for clients to learn ways to speak truthfully and respectfully to one another. Couples will also learn active listening techniques, ensuring that both parties feel heard and understood. As couples implement positive communication skills learned in therapy, they engage with their partners in new ways and reach greater levels of intimacy and honesty in their relationships.
