Your Best Yes—The Practical Side

Every time you say “yes” to something you say “no” to something else. The opposite is also true. Time is one of the most valuable resources we have (along with health) and so it makes sense that we must learn to spend it wisely.

Even though I live in a clean home, I do not enjoy cleaning. Some folks do enjoy cleaning, but I am not one of them. I like to make myself feel better by joking that no one on their death bed says, “I wish I would have spent more time cleaning my house.” But I think there is actually a good bit of truth in this statement.

Our time benefits us the most when it is spent doing what is important to us, as well as nurturing ourselves and those around us. As the holidays gently press in, we are bombarded with invitations of parties to attend, lists of gifts to buy and the pressure to make meaningful, positive memories.

But the truth of the matter is, we all get the same amount of time. Each person gets just 24 hours in each day and just 7 days in each week. If we spend too much time working, we do not get to be close to those we love. If we have too much time with our loved ones, we may neglect more personal activities that refresh us like exercising, reading, meditating or even napping. We all get the same gift of time and the same opportunity to carve it into the chunks that mean the most to us.

This holiday season, I encourage you to take a few moments to reflect on what nourishes your soul. You have the invitation to choose how you will spend the holiday season. Just because your family of origin participated in the same holiday tradition for 30 years, does not mean you have to. One of my closest friends goes to the movies and then eats Chinese food on Christmas because that is what brings her joy.

Take time to consider what brings you joy and then intentionally set aside time for you (alone) and for you and your loved ones (together) that will create the type of memories you look back on with gratitude. If you are struggling with anxiety or depression this holiday season, you are not alone. We are here to support you during this busy time of the year and help you set rhythms and goals that will bring you contentment and peace.
