Bipolar Disorder – The Personal Side

I have had the privilege and honor of serving many people with Bipolar Disorder over the years. Those I have served are some of the most creative, brave, passionate and genuine people I have ever met.  People with Bipolar are just like everyone in else in that they experience the ups and downs of life. It just seems from the outside looking in, that their ups and downs (or highs and lows) are so much bigger and at times so much more dangerous and difficult to navigate.

I have had clients experiencing mania max out their credit cards on trips or spending sprees. I have seen others struggle with alcoholism after drinking heavily during a manic or depressive phase. Depression and suicidality are also a part of this disorder. I have had clients tell me their depression feels like carrying a bookbag filled with cement and that their thoughts of death come daily.

And yet, these same wonderful clients, week after week and sometimes year after year, keep going. They keep showing up to see me. And they keep meeting with their psychiatrist to ensure that their meds are helping them. They are patient with the processes of both therapy and medication. And they do the work that is required to stay healthy.  Their persistence, grit and tenacity are inspiring.
