Sparks of Change—The Personal Side

If you read the practical piece on this blog topic you already know that I am starting to dream about the New Year. I am not making any resolutions, commitments or plans. I am just dreaming. In fact, I would not even call it dreaming yet. I am just beginning to thoughtfully consider the past year and the upcoming year. I am thinking about what went well in 2018 and what I hope to see more of in 2019.

And, can I let you in on a little secret? I think I may be thinking about 2019 for a little while before I know exactly what I want.

In the practical blog on New Year’s, I talked about how some years it takes longer to figure out exactly what you will want and need in the next year. And for me, this is one of those years. So many changes—both wonderful and challenging—have occurred in 2018 that my head is still spinning a little. I am still trying to process all of the significant changes that have happened and what that means for me now and in the upcoming year. And you know what? That is okay!

I am being transparent because maybe you are in the same place. Or maybe you are in the middle of something so wonderful or trying that you can’t even catch your breath! That is okay too. There is no rush for either of us to quickly figure out exactly what we want and need as time moves forward.

What is required for purposeful living is thoughtfulness and a good support system. I am trying to be thoughtful about what I want and need in 2019 and I am continuing to surround myself with members of my support system that give me wisdom, empathy and support as I explore my dreams. I encourage you to surround yourself with positive people who will let you take your time figuring out what you need and provide a caring sounding board when you are still trying to sort everything out.

As January approaches, I encourage you to be patient with yourself. Don’t rush to make plans or set things in motion.  Spend some time thinking, dreaming and talking with your loved ones. Maybe buy a journal and write down your ideas every few days. Meditate, pray, exercise, go outside—do anything that makes space in your mind for you to hear what your body, soul and mind need. It will come to you!
