Walking on Clouds
“A cloud does not know why it moves in just such a direction and at such a speed…it feels an impulsion…this is the place to go now. But the sky knows the reasons and the patterns behind all clouds, and you will know, too, when you lift yourself high enough to see beyond horizons.” ~Richard Bach
One of the things I love about flying in an airplane is looking out the window when the plane is above the clouds. I enjoy seeing how the sun shines and always imagine what it would be like to walk in the clouds, if it were possible. Of course, I would only like to walk on them in calm weather. As I think of this dream of mine, I am reminded of a story from the movie Unconditional.
In this film there is a parable about a little bird named Firebird, who becomes saddened when thunderstorms keep him from enjoying the warmth of the sun. He waits and waits for the storms to pass, but they do not. His mom tells him that he can fly through the storm to find his happiness again. So he begins his flight only to find the storm strengthens. Just as he is about to give up, he keeps going just a little bit farther and finds that above the storm the sun is still shining, always shining.
This story is told in the movie to illustrate the struggle of a woman who is grieving her friend suffering from kidney failure and consequences of life choices, as well as the struggles of the inner city children he helps. As she involves herself in the children’s lives, she begins to find meaning in her life again. She learns how her friend and the children are able to have hope in the midst of their pain.
