Welcome 2021—The Practical Side

I am not usually a betting person, but I would bet that most people are not sad to see 2020 go. To say it has been a challenging year would be a vast understatement. From political and social unrest, to COVID, to unemployment and financial hardship, people are stressed and running on empty. This past year has been a year of unmet expectations in more ways than we can count.

Expectations are important for many reasons. Expectations are tied to our values, they give us something to look forward to and fill us with hope.  So, when things do not go as planned, or expected rather, we experience dissonance. Dissonance (per the Google dictionary) is “tension or clash resulting from the combination of two disharmonious or unsuitable elements.” In other words, we feel let down, tense and out of sync.

The year 2020 has handed us a series of unmet expectations. And, as we look to 2021, we must decide what we will do with what we are holding onto and how this will affect our future. I will speak more to the idea of positively planning your future and how resilience plays a role in this in the personal blog on this piece. For now, I encourage you to explore how you are feeling about 2020 and the things in your life that did not go as planned. When you look around, do you feel hopeful…or discouraged?
