Change Only What You Can Control

From my Previous Blog…

Change what you can control and learn to love the rest.
Sometimes we can control our circumstances, and sometimes we cannot. If we choose to dwell on those parts of ourselves that we cannot change, we are choosing to dislike ourselves.

It can be exhausting to continuously worry about the things in life that we cannot control. As much as we would like to, we do not have the power to predict and control every aspect of our lives.

That being said, we are in control of our attitudes and responses to the situations that present themselves to us. If we refuse to accept the reality that we are not always in control, our feelings may take us on a downward spiral where we are consumed by our anxiety.

So what can we do about this? When a matter is out of our hands, there is nothing we can do but sit back and be patient to see what happens next. We can however make the choice to truly embrace the parts of our lives that we do have the ability to control, and simply learn to accept that some things are just beyond our power.

The 4 things we CAN control:

Our Thoughts
• Our Emotions
• Our Actions
• Our Reactions

Learning to accept that much of what happens in our lives is essentially uncontrollable is the first step in letting go. If we constantly choose to blame ourselves for the things that didn’t turn out as we wanted, we are essentially choosing to be unhappy. Worrying doesn’t halt bad things from happening; it simply delays our ability to recognize the good in our lives. In the end, when life gets hard, we are strong and can survive even the most unpleasant of experiences. Controlling what we can and looking for the positives (rather than the problems) is the ideal way to live a happy, fulfilling life.

Working with a counselor can help you discover your ability to embrace the positives in life and let go of control when necessary.
